Trip to Cochin with Nels. Cochin is a port on Malabar coast, the coast to which people like Vasco da Gama were headed to spice up European life. 13 hours on the train on the way there, Old Cochin with its churches, synagogues and museum, a beach on an island north of town, a few fairly traumatic rickshaw and Ambassador rides, Kerala backwaters on a tourist boat trip from Allepey, and 13 hours on a train back. All in one weekend. The long train ride was actually quite interesting. My favorite part was sitting in the open doors, watching the countryside, the people on small rice fields, villages and mountains.
